Thomas W Shrubsole enlisted into the Royal Artillery 15th January 1896 at Dover Castle as a gunner.

He had light brown hair, a fair complexion & blue-grey eyes and was 5’ 7½” tall.

Thomas was discharged 14th January 1908 after 12 years service during which time he had spent time serving in England, Gibraltar, Malta and Ceylon.

He re-enlisted in 1916 with the East Kent Regiment, the Buffs but was discharged immediately as unfit on medical grounds.

I have found a newspaper cutting of a Thomas Shrubsole being fined £1 at Wingham Petty Sessions for refusing to quit a pub in Ash, Kent in August 1905.

During the period 4th March 1904 to 14th January 1908 he was on home posting with the Royal Artillery, so I am wondering if the R.A. were based at either Woolwich or Dover Castle during that time it is possible he could have been home on leave for a few days when the incident occurred.  The time frame certainly fits.

Looks like Thomas did three month’s hard labour for stealing 16s.
