There is absolutely nothing spectacular that I know of about Etheldreda’s life. However I have included her here as an example of what helps when researching. When I first started out on this hobby back in the 1970’s I joined Folkestone Family History Society, in fact I was one of the first few members of the society. One of the things as a society that we did was to record Monumental Inscriptions in graveyards. We were just coming to the end of one in Cheriton when somebody suggested starting a huge project by recording every single gravestone in Cheriton Road Cemetery that runs along beside the railway line. Believe me it is huge in there! Anyway whilst I was recording one day I came across Etheldreda’s headstone & whilst I had no idea at that time if she belonged to my Shrubsole tree or not I kept her details for myself as well as transcribing them for the society. Obviously Shrubsole was the family I was researching but the name Etheldreda seemed an unusual one for the times but presumably she was named after St Etheldreda. Anyway duly noted & stored away in case of connection later on & lo and behold it turns out she is my second cousin twice removed. Once I established she was in the family I did some more research & discovered she had left a will. She was 73 when she died and had never married & left £3684. 8s to Percy Ealding, a retired grocer & Ronald William Ealding a clerk with the co-operative society. Intrigued & wondering who they were I quickly found that Percy had married Etheldreda’s older sister Ellen Elizabeth & their son was Ronald William. I had previously found a marriage for Ellen Elizabeth but it was on free BMD & there was a choice of two grooms, Percy being one of them. So by finding the probate for Etheldreda it also proved to me which of the two possible grooms Ellen had married. Genealogy is a wonderful hobby if you take the time to enjoy it whilst you’re doing it, rather than just rush at it & collect a whole load of names and dates. I have uncovered some fascinating stories along the way & often go off at a tangent on Shrubsoles from other trees as well - hence you will find on this website several different trees.
