MESSAGE 1  Subject:  John Shrubsole b circa 1766    24 Aug 2002 Author:  Sandra Collins.

I will start this message board off by posting my 'most wanted' Shrubsole - John, my gtx3 grandfather.
He married Ann Clements in Monks Horton in 1809. Ann was buried in Monks Horton in 1828 aged 40 making her birth circa 1788. John was buried in Monks Horton in 1832 aged 66 making his birth circa 1766, although I have long suspected his age may be wrong.

This was my opening message on the board back in 2002 but since then I have broken through the brick wall.  So if anyone wishes to know the logic behind my theory then you can see it here. Sandra Collins 22 May 2021

My 6 x Grandmother Ann Shrusole married Stephen Foreman at Canterbury in 1739 They were both born at Waltham, Stephen in 1713 and Ann on the 2/12/1716. After marriage they lived at Stouting. Ann's parents are recorded as John & Ann Shrubsole in the Parish Records. John & Ann also had a son Thomas born at Waltham 28/11/1714 surname listed Shrubsul.
Would like more information on John, Ann & Thomas if possible. John & Ann do not appear to be born at Waltham.

MESSAGE 7  Subject: James Shrubsole born circa 1760-70  1 Sep 2002 Reg Doble

James was a saddler and harness maker in Canterbury up to mid 1800's. He appears on list of Freemen of Canterbury 1801-1835 as having been made a Freeman before that time. Would love to extend knowledge of James and family back.

Elizabeth SHRUBSOLE(SHELL) was born at Selling in 1760, married William JOHNCOCK 3/2/1781 at Selling. They had 4 children, one Elizabeth(JOHNCOCK) married into the BUNTING family in 1799. Other info welcome.

Just found at least 30 Shrubsoles families listed on the 411 web site in canada.
However I am interested in Edwin Diwell whose wife was Rosa Emma Shrubsole, he was in Hamilton Ontario in 1913.

Rose Emma Shrubsole, my great aunt married Edwin Diwell.  They were in Canada as Rose’s sisters were there but Rose & Edwin didn’t stay & eventually returned to England to live.  I was in contact with Geoff years ago but if anyone else has more information on Edwin I’m sure he’d love to hear from you.  Unfortunately think Great Aunt Rose suffered from dementia in later life;  always remember my mum telling me when any of the family went to visit there would often come a time where she told them they had to leave as she had to get tea ready for the Queen. My grandfather was John Shurbsole his wife was Elizabeth, I believe he worked in the newspaper industry. His wife died in about 1920 I believe, they had four children named John (Jack) Vera, Winifred and Joan. Joan is now 95. I am going to see what she can remember about the family history. Charles SHRUBSOLE b ca 1802 Chartham, a Schoolteacher [he is very possibly the son of John & Elizabeth Shrubsole and baptised 1.12.1802 at Chartham]. He died 8 2 1842 in the parish of St Peter, Sandwich. Charles married Elizabeth Frances COLEMAN, of St Peter Sandwich in 1827. Elizabeth was one of the children of Benjamin & Frances COLEMAN. Charles & Elizabeth had a daughter Eleanor Coleman SHRUBSOLE who married a James William RICHARDSON.

My husband's father is the son of Herbert who was the son of Edwin as far as we know all the family came from Lenham,Hollingbourn and Teynham. My father-in-law was born on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. We all live in Australia so as you can imagine this has been a slow trail to follow. Can you give me any help with details and where do you fit in the family? Hi I was wondering if you could perhaps help me. I have 2 paintings which I inherited from my grandmother. Both are of Cape Town scenes and signed C Shrubsole. I was wondering if Charles Shrubsole or any of his descendants was an artist who visited South Africa? On the back of one painting is written "Road to Camps Bay C Town" and on the other "Pniel Settlement near Stellenbosch CP. Unfortunately there are no dates on the paintings, but my grandmother would have been born in the early 1900"s.
I would love to know more about these paintings as they have great sentimental value to me.

Dear Rosie, I also have two small oil paintings, also inherited from my grandmother,(Pearl Ames) and painted by C. Shrubsole. The Ames family came from Stamford in Kent. I am just new at this and would be happy to find any connections. Hi  if i have got the right cencus for ann shrubsole 1827/30 i think charles 1832 could posably be my 3x great grandmothers younger brother in the 1841 cencus of shrubsole from teynham   Wendy

I have Charles Shrubsole marrying Eliza Ann Else 1858 in Hollingbourne, Kent, not Eliza Gambell, which fits in with the children’s births. [In my family tree]. Not sure where Gambell fits into this – a couple of trees on Ancestry have Gambell whilst others have Else.  Cannot see as yet that Else was once Gambell, although that is a possibility, but there is a baptism of an Eliza Ells 23 Aug 1835 dau of George & Catherine at Wormshill, a stone’s throw from Lenham, Kent.   As to the South African landscape painter CJ Shrubsole –not yet uncovered where he fits as yet.  Sandra Collins. 26 May 2021

My uncle died in 1935 at South Malekula New Hebrides. A C. SHRUBSOLE wrote a letter to our family, as he (she) was the person who cared for him the last days is life.

MESSAGE 10  Subject:  Alfred Shrubsole Horn.  Author: Sue Horn 1 Oct 2002

This man started his life as Alfred Shrubsall born 1808. He was the son of George Shrubsall and Elizabeth Horn of Queenborough, Kent. He had two older brothers, William and George. On his marriage certificate he is known as Alfred Shrubsole Horn and one of his witnesses was George Shrubsole Horn (brother/father I don't know as they both were George). Two generations on he had dropped his father's surname and the family were then known as HORN. So I could have been a Mrs Shrubsole/Shrubsall and not Horn!!  Sue Horn

Hello Sue,  I just received the marriage certificate of my husband's grandfather, Thomas Richard Shrubsole Horn. He married a Margaret Thomas on june 2, 1857 in the Parish Church, Limehouse. One of the witnesses to the marriage was Rachel Horn. His father is shown as George Horn, Mariner. I don't know if this is any connection to your family but sounds possible. Will let you know if I discover anything more.

My forebear was a william lawrence who lost his first wife about 1814 and i believe he married a mary castle widow and had a child called shrubsole later on his son john had my ggggrandfather who was edward horn lawrence i wonder if there is any connection or pure ciincidence bob

A William Horne married a Mary Shrubsole in Queenborough, Kent 10 Jan 1770.  They had 3 children one of whom was George Shrubsol Horne.  George went on to marry & have three children William Shrubsall Horne 1805, George Shrubsall Horne 1807 & Alfred Shrubsall Horne 1808.  Think this is the classic case of taking mother’s surname as a middle name.  Sandra Collins 26 May 2021

I have been researching my late father's family tree for some time. Sorry can't find any links related to message board. I would really like some contact with living members of our family. I was corresponding with the only relative we knew of, Lydia Shrubsall (known as Molly) in Nelson, New Zealand but as that has ceased I fear she has passed away.Most recent entries are: Lizzie Clara, William, George Henry,Eleanor, Helena Anna, Frank Wallace, Edgar Averille,Arthur Andrew William and Percy; all born "Shrubsall" between 1870 and 1891, mostly in Margate. If there is anyone out there I am more than willing to share what information I have gleaned going back to William and Phyllis Shrubsall of Hartlip who died 1681 and 1678 respectively.  Thanks in advance

Hello: I've just come across your message - I have Shrubsalls in my family, nearly all born in or near Milton, Sittingbourne etc. The earliest is Joseph, 1713-1741, then Joseph b. 1739, then Arthur b. 1769, then Josiah Borcham Shrubsall, b. 1829 - he had a daughter Eleanor Jane Barton (born before he married her mother) , who married a John King, from whom I am descended.
There are lots of siblings attahced to all the above. If any of this is of any interest do please contact me

Hi Mike, Pleased to hear from you. We seem to have some matches.I have a Joseph b. 26.04.1705 died 29.06.1741 a fisherman from Hartlip, dob different but death same. He married a Mary Hodges in 1730 and I believe had among other grandchildren a Joseph who died in 1767 and an Arthur born in 1769. My line is from William, Joseph and Arthur's brother. My tree shows the 1769 Arthur marrying Sarah Wood having 6 children, one of whom was Arthur who married Eleanor Borcham, they had 9 offspring, one named Josiah baptised 07.03.1830. Josiah is shown married to Fanny Eliz. Barton 01.04.1849 and having 2 daughters both born in wedlock.Although there are discrepancies there seem to be too many similarities for there to be no connection. My tree has been gathered from different sources,not first hand so is liable to have inaccuracies. I would be pleased to exchange more information if you wish.  Kind regards Sandra.

There's not much obvious common ground between your shrubbies and mine but I'd be delighted to swap just in case. I currently have 62 of them, including Lewis, six times Mayor of Faversham. They mostly resided around Faversham until about 100 years ago, then I think Liverpool, then spreading a bit, including back to Kent.

My father-in-law was Shirley Shrubsole b 4.5.1908 he died in the late 70's. He married Eva Hester/Esther Batt in the 30's.
I know nothing of his parents but with a name like Shirley maybe it won't be to hard to trace. I'm just not sure where to begin as I'm new to this.

Shirley Shrubsole, born 04 May 1908, probably at Sittingbourne, died 03 December 1986; married Eva Esther Batt (1902-1981) in Ashford in 1931. They had one son, David Shrubsole, born 1943, who married Hazel Edwards. I believe they have three children. Shirley was number ten of eleven known children of Albert Shrubsole (1865-1949) and Emily Lusted (1868-1951). Albert was a farm bailiff, and I know that he worked in Sittingbourne, Newington, Stockbury and Pluckley (Dowle Street Farm). My grandfather, Richard Shrubsole (1901-1990), known as Dick and lived most of his life in Bethersden, was the eighth child of Albert and Emily. Albert's parents were Richard Shrubsole (1821-1880) and Emma Chandler (1826-1908) and Albert was the last of their eight known children. Emily's parents were James Lusted (born 1840 Leeds, Kent) and Emily -?- (born about 1848 Leeds, Kent). Emily was the eldest of their seven children. Julie's 2x greatgrandfather is Robert Francis Shrubsole (1848-1899) who was born in Kingston. His father is William Shrubsole (c.1811/12-188) who is recorded as a banker and could be the Mayor of Kingston 1849 (we are still checking). Hi David, my uncle is also called David Shrubsole. He was born in 1962 in Kingston Upon Thames Surrey. His father (my grandfather) was called Albert Shrubsole & was a solicitor by profession. My uncle moved to Devon 10 years ago & then to Wareham in Dorset 6 years ago, where he now lives with my aunt Tracey & cousin Oliver. Are you familiar with the Shrubsole statue still standing in Kingston Town Square? It is of a woman & child, and has our characteristic 'Shrubsole nose'. A common trait in my family. It was erected in the 1880s i think, in memory of my great-great great grandfather who was mayor of Kingston twice. It appears he may have been a patron who loaned the instrument to Ludwig Straus, a well known Austrian violinist of the day who lived in London. I'm researching the family of my 2nd cousin who's Mother, Mabel Kate Shrubsole married Ernest Alfred German in 1915, but died in 1928 at the time of his birth. He's an old man now and knows nothing of his Mother's family except the following:
They lived in Milton next Sittingbourne where someone in the family had a drapery. She had a brother, Ernest, and another, Richard. Richard went to Canada, fought with the Canadians in the 1st WW, married a Canadian and eventually returned to Milton next Sittingbourne in Kent, where he and his wife adopted orphans, including one called Mary still alive and living in Upchurch, Kent, but too confused to be helpful. Can anyone shed any light on this family?

Yes, her son, Godfrey German is still alive and well and has her birth certificate and marriage certificate. She was born Aug 16th 1894 at Nine Ashes, Boughton under Blean, married Ernest German (b 1889) on Dec 15th 1915 at the Weslyan Church, Sittingbourne and died in 1928 from Milk fever when Godfrey was barely one month old. I also have her brother's attestation papers in the Canadian army, and have traced her ancestors back to 1660. Any help? By the way, I found "Mary" extremely lucid.  Best wishes  Hazel

It's not the same but my grandmother, Harriet Rose Shrubsole, b.1884, married a Stephen Thomas Palmer and so my surname was Palmer before I married. However, your connection seems to be earlier. They were both from Kent but I don't have much information about the Palmer side of my family.

Would you have any information regarding this lady - my grandmother? She was born January 6th 1891. She married a man by the name of Sidney Shrubsall in England (unfortunately I do not have the date)They had one son Dennis Claude Henry born 1918.
This was my grandmothers first husband, and she divorced him and came out to Australia in 1937, and married for the second time.
The story I have always heard is that Sidney was an accountant or something, and got jailed for embezzlement. If you have any info I would really appreciate it

Just discovered your posting through a google search.
Myra Newton is my 1st cousin 2x removed her father Edward Holdsworth Newton being my great grand uncle.
I was told that Cyril, Myra and their children ( Edwin Wendy and maybe another child) were killed by the Japanese in Calinog ,Philippines on or around 5th January 1944. My mother was told that the family were hiding and it was the sound of the baby crying that gave them away to the Japanese. I have trying to find out more information about them for a couple of years without success. What a very sad story.  I found their marriage in 1928 Wharfedale, Yorkshire & found them living with Myra’s family in the 1939 census.  Definitely more research needed here.  Sandra Collins 27 May 2021

I would be very interested to see if I have any connection to the Shrubsoles that are mentioned here.
My Great Grandfather, named Percy Shrubsole (from Kent), was a choirboy for the Caterbury Cathedral, had 2 sisters who lived in Folkston and fought in the first World War. He Married a woman named Winnifred in the late 1800's (1901 has been mentioned) and had 3 children, the 2nd child being my Grandfather John Shrubsole (the other two children being Lou (oldest) and Kathleen (youngest). They immigrated to Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba) in 1928, then moved to Vancouver, British Columbia shortly after. Percy passed in 1942, not certain about my great grand mother but I can easily retrieve the info.
If it helps, my grandfather used to mention quite often that he came from a long line of Butchers, he being one himself until he retired. He, married my grandmother, Martha Vant and had 3 children, 2 daughters and a son, the son (middle child) being my Father, John Kenneth Shrubsole (Diana - Oldest, Shirley – Youngest).

If it helps, my Shrusole tree (my wife's family) includes a Percy. The family consists of Mary J 1860, Samuel J 1861, Harry 1862, Percy 1864, Octavius Henry M 1871. Their parents were Stephen Shrubsole 1834 and Mary 1837.
Stephen's siblings were Elizabeth T 1826, Lewis (six times Mayor of Faversham) 1827-1904, Grace W 1832, and Harriet 1836.

The meaning of the Shrubsole name
Genealogy experts come to no clear conclusion but suggest the origin of the surname derives from two sources. The ‘sole’ part is more straightforward and probably means ‘a mire’ but the first element is problematic and could be connected with the old English word for sheep, or with middle English word for shop or as a personal name of an individual. Another idea is that the form Sobesole found in the 13th century may mean ‘the muddy waste land to the south’  and when devolved into Shrubsole the first part might again involve a person’s name indicating the former ownership of ‘the land on the marsh’.
The relatively more modern link with the word shrub denoting a bush could give the meaning of the ‘shrub on the marsh’ or the ‘hall by the shrub’. Take your pick.
Origin of the family name
It is likely that the Shrubsole name originated in Kent, as an early reference occurs in Canterbury in 1318 when Thomas de Shroppesole and his wife Ann purchased a house and garden there for �5. In nearby Boughton-under-Blean, generations of Shrubsole, Shrubsall and variants occur since the start of parish records in the 16th century. With a possible epicenter at Canterbury, through migration the name slowly spread through Kent. Despite the proximity of London offering a variety of work opportunities, information from the 1881 Census shows families concentrated in Kent, and from a survey of distribution patterns based on entries in telephone directories, even in present times the name occurs more frequently in Kent.
By the late 18th century, the unreliable and varied spelling of the name has settled into three main variations: Shrubsole, Shrubsall and Shrubshall. Although the variations were still interspersed, geographically each of the three seemed to become concentrated in a particular area of Kent. With the beginning of civil registration in 1837, it is possible to track the variants. Shrubsole is by far the most common spelling, with Shrubsall coming well behind and only a small following of Shrubshall. Occasionally a Shrubshell would occur. From an analysis of the death indexes covering 10 years from 1870, of the 21 recorded Shrubsall deaths, 15 occurred in the Sittingbourne and Sheerness areas. The hot spot for Shrubshall was around Ashford and Elham, where 6 of the 12 deaths occurred and the 55 Shrubsole deaths showed a distinct clustering in the Faversham, Canterbury and Elham areas of East Kent.
For those of you with 19th or 20th century forebears from Sheerness, Sittingbourne and nearby Milton, it is quite likely that you all share a common ancestor stemming from the Hartlip farmer, Thomas Shrubsall. It is also possible that you are linked together from the marriage of Joseph Shrubsall and Jane Dawson of Milton near Sittingbourne in 1764. Joseph’s will dated 1813 names five surviving sons as beneficiaries and the Milton and Sheppey clusters seem to spring from these men, especially the third son Arthur who had two wives, producing 7 sons as well as 5 daughters.

Coat of Arms

It is nice to know there is a notable Shrubsole Coat of Arms. This armorial bearing was granted in 1812 to Richard Shrubsole, the son and heir of Robert Shrubsole of Graveney, Kent. The shield design is, as is often the case, a pun on the interpretation of the surname, associating the importance of the cherry to its Shrubsole families engaged in fruit cultivation in Kent. Certainly, making a living from fruit growing can be confirmed. When James Shrubsall of Hartlip, Kent made his will in 1746 he described himself as a fruiterer, as did his brother Stephen Shrubsall in his will of 1762. Daniel Shrubsall of the nearby parish of Borden was also described as a fruiterer at his death.
From Hasted’s extensive histories of Kent, written around 1798, Hartlip parish is described as ‘on high ground, surrounded by frequent orchards of apples and cherry trees, which renders the view of it from the London Road very pleasing’.

Snippet
St Michael’s Church in Hartlip possesses a 9 inch high silver chalice weighing over 14 ounces, inscribed ‘The Gift of Mrs Shrubsall of this parish, 1782’. This was donated by Grace Shrubsall nee Rogers, the widow of Stephen Shrubsall who was one of the principal tenant farmers of the parish in the early 18th century. His ancestors have been traced back to William Shrubsall who with his wife Phillis were farming in Hartlip in Oliver Cromwell’s time. It is quite possible that William came from Boughton-under-Blean.

hi,no idea about the name, have heard it was originally norse quite a common name then like Woods, or Palmer. I am Canadian But can state as fact: my descendants landed at Ellis Island NY USA in 1780's. Settled in Northern Michigan Penninsula. Around Soo Michigan, Married Upper Canadian girls, fought against US in war of 1812. Direct descendants from Sault Ste Marie ON.Edgerton Shrubsole was violin maker "Birds Eye Maple" trim and bell, Spruce sound board. St. Joseph's island was his shop, He died bout 1971. Hi, my great grandfather was Edgerton Shrubsole. Mary Shrubsole (his daughter) was my Grandmother. I don't know much about these kind of postings but thought I'd try to connect . I know my great aunt (Ruth Black nee Shrubsole) lived on St. Joseph's Island 10 years ago. I have not been in contact with her since then so she could have moved by now.
Edgerton Shrubsole was a violin maker and Mary was a concert master in the Toronto symphony orchestra. My daughter plays violin now and I would like to someday buy her one of the violins that edgerton made. So if you still have it, please don't sell it.

Stanley Smith Shrubsole was I think the 8th child of his parents, and they came from Sheppey. He went into accountancy/insurance I think before entering the church, his first appt. as a Congregational Minister was at Cheltenham 1913 - ? I know he was a pastor in the Army in the first world war and his subsquent churches were Ipswich, and Sutton. My 5th Great Grandfather was a Mathisson Palmer b1748 Minster he had a son George Shrubsole Palmer B1780 Minster ,George had a son William Shrubsole Palmer b 30 Dec 1802 Sheerness ,William had a sister MaryAnn Palmer b1805 and two brothers George Shrubsole Palmer b 1814 and Charles Shrubsole Palmer b1816.
I am researhing all these but would love to know anything anyone has on these people.I live in Australia.
