Stephen John was born in 1890 in Folkestone the son of Charles Henry Shrubsole & Mary Ann Down; one of their five children.
He lived with his family in Walton Road, Folkestone & was a Grocer at Lipton & Co., in the High Street at Folkestone until he joined the 4th Bn; The Buffs in 1912
His records are somewhat scorched so I think I have read them correctly but could well be mistaken on some points.
His theatre of war was in India as can be seen by his embarkation and debarkation dates:

He transferred to 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Reg 16 2 1918 Proceeded to Bombay 15 9 1918 & then transferred to 1st Battalion Manchester Regt Hong Kong.
Embarked for Southampton 15 12 1918 and then cannot read any further until his discharge on 16 Jan 1920.
He was acting paid Lance Corporal from 3 5 1917
Reliquished acting pay 10 8 1917
Appointed Lance Corporal 15 5 1918
He was awarded The British War Medal, The Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star.
There is a Stephen J Shrubsole living in Willesden, London in 1939 with a wife Sadie Shrubsole but as yet can't find a marriage for them.
