William Richard Shrubsole was born 1897 in Faversham to William Richard Shrubsole & Elizabeth Ann Maughan; one of their 7 children.
William was stone breaking until he enlisted on September 1914 into the 6th (Service) Bn; The Buffs which was formed in Canterbury in August 1914 as part of Kitchener's First New Army; they joined the 37th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Divison.
After training at Purfleet and Aldershot they landed in Bolougne 1st June 1915 and proceeded to Ploesgsteert Wood where they took over a section of the front line on 23rd June. They were involved in the Battle of Loos from 30th September, which involved taking part in the action of the Hollenzollern Redoubt on 13th October, which presumably is where William lost his life. Death presumed on or near 13.10.15
During this period at Loos 117 officers and 3,237 men of the division were killed or wounded.
William's medals - The British War Medal, The Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star were given to his parents.
He'd presumably lied on joining about his age as in 1914 when he signed up stating his age was 19 he was in fact only just 17.
He was so young to die, only 18 years old and I am sure he was sadly missed by his family.
He is remembered on the Loos Memorial, France
