Louis Henry was born 15 April 1898 to John Shrubsole & Mary Ottaway, one of their 7 children.
On 28 Sep 1914 he enlisted at Woolwich, London into the 66th Field Ambulance Unit of the Army Service Corps and at some stage voluntarily transferred over to the Border Regiment as a driver.
On enlistment he gave his age as 19 but by his year of birth we can see he lied and was in fact only 16. He was a farm labourer up until enlistment.
During his service he was with the Expeditionary Force in France from 7 Sep 1915 to 22 Nov 1915 and then with the Expeditionary Force in the Mediterranean from 23 Nov 1915 - 11.4.1919. He was eventually discharged 11 Nov 1919 on disability grounds suffering from the effects of Malaria. He was awarded the British War Medal, The Victory Medal and the 1914-15 Star.
The following month, Dec 1919 Louis signed up as an assistant steward in the Merchant Navy and in 1921 married Ellen M Evans in Hastings and they went on to have three daughters. I don't know how long he stayed in the Merchant Navy but by 1939 he was at home with his family & his occupation was Master Carpenter & Builder, so I'm guessing his stint in the Merchant Navy probably finished when he got married.
He died in 1957 in Hastings.
